Why are you a membership practice?
Unlike ordinary primary care practices that only treat you when you get sick, we believe it’s also our responsibility to help you prevent disease and stay healthy in the first place. This means providing proactive, individualized attention to your health & wellness needs, and giving you quick, convenient access to your doctor when you need it (whether that’s in the office, via phone, or via email). Unfortunately, today’s health system forces most doctors to practice “assembly-line” medicine – maintaining extremely large patient panels and squeezing as many office visits into a day as possible simply to cover costs.
By operating as a membership practice with a reasonable monthly membership fee, we are able maintain a more appropriate practice size that allows us to give each patient the highest levels of individual attention they deserve. In addition, our affiliation with our membership practice partner, Privia Health, gives us access to the latest technology tools, wellness experts, and care coordination support so that we can operate our practice more efficiently and provide a better care experience to our patients.
Are other top doctors transitioning to membership practices?
Yes. With rising costs and declining reimbursements, many top doctors are transitioning to membership-based practices. In fact, in just the last few years the number of membership practices nationally has increased over 400%. In the Wilmington area, many of the best physicians no longer accept insurance (they are “cash only”), and many are transitioning to the “concierge medicine” practice model where they charge patients $2000 per year or more simply to remain in the practice. We chose to affiliate with Privia Health and provide a more affordable membership program – less than a daily cup of coffee – while still providing personalized VIP benefits. We feel this is a much better value for our patients.
Do you still continue to accept insurance?
Yes, unlike many of our peers, we continue to accept most health insurance plans – another reason why we believe our membership fee structure is very reasonable.
I’m pretty healthy and hardly ever go to the doctor. Is this practice right for me?
Our membership practice is designed to be equally beneficial whether your goals are remaining healthy, preventing disease, catching potential issues early, or maintaining a high quality of life while managing a chronic illness. Most healthcare services today focus primarily on “sick care” – our goal is keeping you healthy in the first place by helping you to proactively manage your health. When you do get sick, or are diagnosed with a serious disease, you’ll have confidence in knowing you have convenient access (via in-person, phone or email) to a top physician, to expert personal health advisors, and to Privia’s VIP relationships with some of the best specialists and hospitals in the world.
Can you give me an example of how my Privia membership will enhance my care, help me save time, and help me save money?
Sure. Let’s say over the weekend you develop a painful rash on your upper leg. It itches and you’ve come down with a fever. Typically, you would call your doctor’s office first thing on Monday, speak with the receptionist, and book the first available appointment, which might be on Wednesday or Thursday. However, as a Privia member, you could decide to email your doctor on Sunday night through our secure website, describe the rash and your symptoms in detail, and even possibly upload a picture of the rash for your doctor to view. Your doctor can then access your secure message from home, review your online health record, and respond to you that it looks like a reoccurring case of shingles. Your doctor can then electronically send a prescription for an antiviral over to your local drugstore (we’ll already know which drugstore you prefer because it will be in your online health record). Your doctor can then also alert one of Privia’s nurse Health Advisors and ask them to send you some educational materials on shingles and follow-up with you in a few days to see how you are doing.
Through this simple innovation, we’ve just (1) saved you the cost of an office visit, (2) saved your time, and (3) started you on antiviral medication within the first 72 hours of the rash, which results in a better clinical outcome. That’s the power of the Privia membership practice model.
Does my membership in Privia Health replace my health insurance or Medicare?
No. Privia Health is a membership program that provides enhanced non-covered benefits on top of your health insurance plan or Medicare. We will continue to bill you and/or your insurance or Medicare for any covered professional services provided to you. The benefits you receive through your Privia membership are only for services that are not already covered by Medicare or your health insurance provider.
Are my membership fees to Privia Health tax deductible?
Your membership fees may be tax deductible if paid through a qualified Health Savings Account (HSA), Medical Savings Account (MSA), or other qualified plan. Consult your plan administrator and tax professional.
What if I change physicians and need to cancel my membership after a few months?
You may cancel your membership at any time and receive a pro-rata refund of your membership fee.
What if I cannot afford the monthly membership fee?
A limited number of full and partial need-based membership applications are available for qualified established patients who cannot afford the monthly membership fee. We have chosen to keep the monthly membership price low so that the vast majority of our patients will find it affordable. Need based applications generally follow HHS Federal Poverty Guidelines. Is Privia Health affiliated with any health insurance plan or hospital system?
No. Privia works directly for you. As a Member, you’ll have access to a team of healthcare professionals whose sole mission is to help you get access to the best healthcare available – regardless of your health insurance plan. That said, Privia does maintain VIP relationships with some of the leading health systems in the world in order to facilitate getting you priority access to the best care, including a strong relationship with the Mayo Clinic.
Is this practice considered a "Patient–Centered Medical Home"?
Yes! The American College of Physicians defines a Patient-Centered Medical Home as "a team–based model of care led by a personal physician who provides continuous and coordinated care throughout a patient's lifetime to maximize health outcomes." This model has received widespread attention and support in recent years – in fact many of the leading physician groups including the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Family Physicians have lobbied Congress to expand this model of care because of its positive impact on quality and long-term costs. We’re proud to be right at the forefront of the Patient-Centered Medical Home movement.
